What to expect on test day

Taking the IELTS test? See what to expect.

Picture this: you have studied and you are prepared for the IELTS test. You know how many papers there are, you know how to tackle each question type and you feel very confident. It’s great. But what to expect on the day of the test?

The IELTS test is a long one – around 3 hours. Speaking (approx. 14 min) is done separately, either before or after the other three papers (Listening, Reading and Writing), which are taken in one session of 2h40min without breaks. This is very important information, as you might want to use the toilet before you enter the test room.

Make sure to be at the testing centre on time. Bring the same ID/passport you used to book the test. You will not be allowed to take the test if you bring the wrong ID or forget to bring it.

You will need to leave your personal belongings – which include phones and other electronics – in a designated area. Make sure to turn off your phone so it doesn’t disturb other candidates in case it rings during the test.

Although food is not allowed in the test room, you can take water with you provided that it is in a clear bottle with no labels.

Finally, make sure you follow the instructions to ensure you have the best experience possible.

Good luck!
